Evangelical Churches

If you happen to be walking along the street and hear strange whooping and ecstatic singing coming from a corner house, it is probably not a wild teenage party but the worshipful incantations common in more than 1,500 evangelical churches that have sprung up in Puerto Rico since the Americans arrived in 1898. Today, 8% of Puerto Ricans are members of Protestant congregations, and 3% practice a different belief system, which includes Jews and Muslims. Fewer than 3% of Puerto Ricans state that they are not religious.
