Meeting Point Bryggen is also the starting point for guided walks through Bryggen's past, from Bryggens Museum through the Bryggen wharf and its old wooden buildings to the Hanseatic Museum. For more information, see page 20.

Hakon's Hall was built during the reign of King Hakon Hakonsson between 1247 and 1261. It was the largest and most imposing building of the royal residency in the 13th-century when Bergen was the political centre of Norway.

Opening hours: 15 May-31 Aug: Daily 10.00-16.00. Guided tours of the Hall and Rosenkrantz Tower every hour, starting in the Hall. Closed during the Bergen International Festival and on special occasions. 1 Sept-14 May: Daily 12.00-15.00, Thurs: 15.00-18.00. Sundays guided tours every hour. See p. 24.

[email protected] - www.bymuseet.no The tower was built in the 1560s by the governor of Bergen Castle (Bergenhus), Erik Rosenkrantz, and served as a combined residence and fortified tower. Earlier structures - King Magnus the Lawmender's keep from about 1260 and J0rgen Hanss0n's defences from about 1520 - were incorporated by Erik Rosenkrantz.

One of the oldest and best preserved wooden buildings in Bergen, furnished in the style of the 1700s to give an intimate picture of the life of a Hanseatic merchant. Guided tours in Norwegian, English, German and French in June, July and August.

Opening hours: 15 May-15 Sept: Daily 09.00-17.00.

16 Sept-14 May: Tues.-Sat. 11.00-14.00, Sun. 11.00-16.00. Mon. closed.

Entrance fee: NOK 45. 16 Sept-14 May: NOK 25. Children free.
