Golfers may want to try their luck at the North American-designed Praha Karlstejn Golf Club, a course that hosted its first European PGA tour event in 1997. This challenging 6,370m, par-72 course on the hill just across the river from the castle offers some pretty views. At the elevated tee on the second hole, you'll hit toward the castle. It's a breathtaking place to lose a ball. If you want a real challenge, see if you can match former Masters winner German Bernhard Langer's four-round total of 264 (24 under par). To get here by car from Prague, take Highway 116 south through the castle town of Karlstejn. Once you cross the river and a set of train tracks, stay on the road, which veers right and goes up a hill. You'll see the golf course on the left and an entrance soon after.

Golf has been played at St Andrews since the 15th century and by 1457 was apparently so popular that James II had to place a ban on it because it was interfering with his troops' archery practice. Although it lies beside the exclusive, all-male (female bartenders, unsurprisingly, allowed) Royal & Ancient Golf Club, the Old Course is actually public.
Kiahuna Golf Club In 2004 the front 9 holes of this par-70, 6,353-yard Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed course underwent complete renovation. The course plays around four large archaeological sites, ranging from an ancient Hawaiian temple to the remains of a Portuguese home and crypt built in the early 1800s. This Scottish-style course has rolling terrain, undulating greens, 70 sand bunkers, and near-constant winds. The 3rd hole, a par-3 185-yarder, goes over Waikomo Stream. Marianske Lazne now stands in the shadow of the Czech Republic's most famous spa town, Karlovy Vary, but it wasn't always that way. First noted in 1528 by Bohemian historians, the town's mineral waters gained prominence at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries. Nestled among forested hills and packed with romantic and elegant pastel hotels and spa houses, the town, commonly known by its German name, Marienbad, has played host to such luminaries as Goethe (this is where his love for Ulrika von Levetzow took root), Mark Twain, Chopin, Strauss, Wagner, Freud, and Kafka. England's Edward VII found the spa resort so enchanting that he visited nine times and even commissioned the building of the country's first golf club.
Mesilau is 20km from Mt Kinabalu National Park HQ. To get to the resort, follow the main road past Mt Kinabalu Park headquarters for 6km, heading in the direction of Kandasan and Ranau. In a few minutes you will come to the settlement of Kandasan, which is recognisable by the stalls along the highway selling honey, fruit, baskets etc. You can get nice salak, mangosteen, durian and wild jungle honey here. Turn left (north) just past the stalls, following a sign for the Kundasan War Memorial. Otherwise, drive six km and you will come to some painted tires and a sign for Mesilau Nature Resort. Turn here and drive through the Mt Kinabalu Golf Club. It's a very steep four km to the resort from this turning. We thought our Proton might give up the ghost.

Begin at the Eora Aboriginal rock engravings (1) between the tower and the cliffs at Bondi Golf Club. Some decades ago they were bi-zarrely 're-grooved' by the well-meaning but insensitive local council. March south along Military Rd, left into Ramsgate Ave and taste the sea spray at the lookout (2). The trail then runs along the rocks to the beach - if the surf s humungous, stay high and dry on Ramsgate Ave. Have a quick dip then rummage through Sunday's funky Bondi Beach Market (3 pi03), or stick your head into Bondi Pavilion (4) for an exhibition or performance.
Andrews in northeast Fife, about 80km (50 miles) from Edinburgh, was once filled with monasteries and ancient buildings, but only a few ruins of its early history survive. Once a revered place of Christian pilgrimage, today the historic town by the sea is best known for golf. It has been played here at least as early as the 1600s, though some believe much earlier. The rules of the sport are reviewed, revised, and clarified in St. Andrews by the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, while its Old Course is perhaps the most famous 18 holes in the world. Golfers consider this town to be hallowed ground. The Old Course, which hosted the Open in 2005, is a different kettle of fish First you need a handicap of 24 for men and 36 for women. You apply in writing one year in advance and, even then, there are no guarantees. There is a daily ballot or lottery, which gives out about 50 percent of the tee times for the following day's play. Apply in person or by telephone...

The Empire Hotel & Country dub (Ig 241-8999 www .empire.com.bn Muara-Tutong Rd) is a prominent reminder of Prince Jefri's scandalous spending habits. While it's true that the hotel has all the subtlety of a Las Vegas casino, it's definitely a spectacle worth seeing. And, as you wander the grounds, you can't help but wonder how they ever expected this place to pay for itself.
