Getting There Away

A state bus, No 452, leaves from the Press House in Bucharest at 7.30am and 5.30pm, returning to the city at 8.50am and 6.50pm. The journey takes one hour each way (€0.75) and goes straight to the monastery gates. Or you can take bus No 448, which leaves every hour, and get off at Urziceni, at the signpost 'Monastirei Cäldäru^ani' to the left; it's a 3km hike from here. To get back, walk to the junction and there's a bus every hour to Bucharest.

By car, take the E60 highway north to Ploie^ti for 16km, turn right onto the 101C road to Fierbinti. Go for another 16km and do a left at the sign for the monastery.

Some Bucharest-Galati trains, departing from Garä de Nord, stop at Greci (50 minutes, five daily), where you alight for Cäldäru^ani. The monastery is a 2km walk north from the train station.
