Bucharest's budding bar scene is liveliest in the Lipscani area, which now has a dedicated pedestrianised road called Summer Streel which is lined with trendy pubs and outside tables. Piata Universitatii is alive with revellers at the weekend, and hosts free outdoor pop concerts in summer.

Amsterdam Grand Cafe (Map p60; © 313 7580; Sir Covad 6; ® 10am-2am) It's like being at home yet much nicer, funkier and with better looking bar staff and better cooking. Gel here early and feast on massive portions of excellent food (the vegetable fajitas arc particularly good), then enjoy the beer and eclectic crowds.

La Ruine (Map p60; ©312 3943; Str Lipscani 88; ® 11am-6am) This outdoor, bamboo-clad bar is brilliantly set up in the space left by a demolished building, hence the name.

Tipsy (Map p60; B-dul Schitu Maugureanu 13; ® 3pm 4am) Funky little bar with hip crowd, good tunes, regular DJs and a summer terrace. If also serves simple food.

Laptaria Enache/La Motor (Map p60; B-dul Nicolae Balcescu 2) Trendy joint on the 4th floor of the Ion Luca Caragiale National Theatre (with a rooftop bar another floor up). It's lined with one long bar, a lively student crowd, huge metal sculptures and a new wooden seating area. Enjoy live jazz at weekends, summer film screenings on the roof terrace and generally raucous behaviour. Enter via the unmarked entrance at the northern side of the theatre, to the side of Dominusart Gallery.

White Horse (Map pp54-5; © 231 2795; Str George Calinescu 4; ®noon-3am) British pub with crazy, boozed-up patrons having fun every weekend. It's noisy, crowded and smoky -but a top night out.

Buddha Bar (Map pp54-5; Calea Mojiior 36) So trendy it hurts. Soak up the cool karma in this lush, red-painted bar within staggering distance of Bureibista restaurant and Youth Hostel Villa Helga.

Dubliner (Map pp54-5; © 222 9473; Jos Titulescu 18; ®9am-2am) A good, old-fashioned pub with simple grub, including Guinness and steak pie. The olde-worlde style is offset by Sky Sports, which draws in the footy crowd.

Opium Studio (Map pp54-5; © 0722-505 066; Str Horei 5; ® 7pm-4am) Cool, collected and illtrageously eclectic is the name of the lidinc at this cellar bar, furnished in the iihiM fabulously theatrical of manners.

Salsa 2 (Map p60; © 0723-412 267; Str Luterana 9; ki lpm-6am) Bongos, steel drums and lots of «■miy-beat make this a sexy, upbeat taste il ()uba.

Twice (Map p60; ©313 5592; Str Sfanta Virieri 4; vl 9pm-5am) Popular party place, with techno hruts and classic '80s and '90s hits in one ' iii/.y club.

Fire Club (Map p60; © 0722-390 946; Str Gabroveni ' 11 ®10pm-6am) This club spins alternative i in nds until the wee hours.

Vox Maris (Mappp54-5; ©311 1994; Calea Victoriei i'.'.; ® 10pm-4am) Big, cheesy, super club with Ints of one-armed bandits.
