On 16 August 2004 the pretty, sleepy harbourside village of Boscastle was catapulted onto TV screens worldwide. The most devastating flash flood to hit Britain for 50 years forced 440 million gallons of water through the heart of the village in just a few hours. It swept away a hundred cars and caused devastating damage to many of village's oldest buildings; 58 properties were flooded and much of the village was evacuated by helicopter. Miraculously not a single person lost their life.

Residents have spent years piecing Boscastle back together, with many properties now completely refurbished. The new visitor centre (% 01840-250010; www.visitboscastle; S 10am-5pm Mar-Oct) sits by the harbour.

The quirky Museum of Witchcraft (% 01840250111; The Harbour; adult/child £3/2.50; S 10.30am-6pm Mon-Sat, 11.30am-6pm Sun) has the world's largest collection (apparently) of witch-related memorabilia. Among its artefacts are spooky poppets (a kind of voodoo doll), wooden witch mirrors, enchanted skulls and a hideous cast-iron 'witch's bridle' designed to extract confessions from suspected hags.
