Getting Around

Denmark's small size and efficient train network means that domestic air traffic is quite limited, usually to business travellers and people connecting from international flights through Copenhagen. Still, domestic carriers offer frequent services between Copenhagen and a few of the more distant corners. The good news is that the competition driven by the budget air revolution has ensured that flight prices have in many cases actually come down. Cimber Air ( 70 10 12 18 www.cimber.dk) flies...

Copenhagen For Children

Is there a more child-friendly European city than Copenhagen If there is, we haven't been there. Then again, it shouldn't really come as a surprise considering this is the city that gave birth to children's literature by way of Hans Christian Andersen. Aside from the facts that it is safe (parents often leave infants sleeping in prams outside caf s and shops), the transport systems are pram-friendly and much of the centre is pedestrianised, the city also lays on numerous attractions...

Odense

Funen's 1000-year-old capital is a cheerful place, welcoming to pedestrians and cyclists. The city makes much ado about being the birthplace of Hans Christian Andersen - although Andersen fled the city after his poverty-stricken childhood here - and fairy-tale fans will be delighted by the preponderance of Andersen-related attractions. These range from several museums dedicated to the man to sculptures of his most famous stories, plus surprises such as public benches with monsters' claws for...

The bustling pedestrian shopping street Stroget begins at the northeast side of R dhuspladsen, while the historic pleasure garden, Tivoli, glitters to the southwest. R dhuspladsen is not especially attractive and there have been endless discussions recently about how to jazz it up - designs for a...

History

Copenhagen was founded in 1167 by tough-as-nails Bishop Absalon, who erected a fortress on Slotsholmen Island, fortifying a small and previously unprotected harbourside village. After the fortification was built, the harbourside village grew in importance and took on the name Komandshavn Merchant's Port , which was later condensed to Kobenhavn. Absalon's fortress stood until 1369, when it was destroyed in an attack on the town by the powerful Hanseatic states. In 1376 construction began on a...

Bornholm

The sunniest part of Denmark - it's official - lies way out in the Baltic Sea, 200km east of Copenhagen. In fact, Bornholm is so far from Copenhagen and the rest of 'mainland' Denmark that it doesn't fit on the weather maps although perhaps that would be too demoralising for the rest of Denmark . Bornholm is a special place for the Danes, most of whom have spent at least one holiday there it's popular with school trips basking on its 30km of glorious sandy beaches, cycling the classic method...
