Beijing Hotel (Beijing Fandian) Overrated This patchwork behemoth at the bottom of Wangfujing Dajie claims a history of over 100 years, but the main structure wasn't built until 1974, and all charm died with a modern renovation in 2000. The old rooms have now been replaced with spacious but lackluster units offering the same bland brand of luxury found in most government-affiliated hotels. You can get better value for your money up the street at the Grand Hotel. Dong Chang'an Dajie 33, Dongcheng District. & 010/6513-7766. Fax 010/6513-7307. [email protected] beijinghotel.com.cn. Grand Hotel (Beijing Guibinlou Fandian) The Grand Hotel is a separately managed 10-story 1990 addition to the west end of the Beijing Hotel complex with marginally better service and a pleasant central atrium beginning on the third floor. Decently sized rooms on the west side offer good views of the Forbidden City, and the location is tough to beat, but as with the Beijing Hotel, your money is better spent elsewhere.
