Le Meridiens LHabitation Le Domaine

EARTH WATCH The Meridien hotels are no longer using chemicals on the plants to keep green fly, plant louse, etc. at bay. They now use ladybugs. They also have chickens roaming freely around the property to keep the centipedes away. The hotels are very conscientious about conserving energy and water and actively advise their guests to do the same.

Environmental Hazards

Mosquitoes are prevalent in Hong Kong. You should always use insect repellent and if bitten use hydrocortisone cream to reduce swelling. Lamma Island is home to large red centipedes, which have a poisonous bite that causes swelling and discomfort in most cases, but can be more dangerous (and supposedly in very rare cases deadly) for young children.

The Sounds of the Rio Grande

Watch out for scorpions and centipedes, both nocturnal, that might be inside your shoes if you leave them outside overnight. Rattlesnakes and copperheads also inhabit the area so wear high boots when hiking off the usual tourist trails. While mountain lions are rarely seen, there have been two attacks in recent years. If you encounter one, park rangers advise you

Colonisation Occupation Singapore Under the British

Despite its wealth, the colony was a dissolute place, beset by crime, clan violence, appalling sanitation, opium addiction, rats, huge poisonous centipedes, mosquitoes and tigers. Life for the majority was extremely harsh the Chinatown Heritage Centre (p60) is probably the best place to appreciate just how harsh.

Chaguaramas The Bocas Islands

The coastal area of Chaguaramas and the Bocas Islands are in the northwest corner of Trinidad. The small group of islands, sometimes called the Dragon's Mouth, leads to and protects the Gulf of Paria. Lying between Venezuela and the coast of Trinidad, this sheltered gulf area is being extensively developed for yachting services. Chaguaramas, on the mainland, and the offshore Bocas Islands are rich in history and offer many opportunities to explore the natural environment. Each of the offshore islands has unique attractions - Gasparee's caves, Chacachacare's leper hospital, salt pond, and iguanas, and Centipede Island's centipedes. Good swimming beaches can be found on the islands, but beaches are less accessible on the mainland. We have listed a few hotels and restaurants in this area, all with a yachty feel.

Insects Other Creatures

Other insects that bite or sting include bees, wasps, hornets and small red ants. The insect people fear the most is the large centipede. Though they look very frightening, reaching about 15cm (six inches) long, their sting is no more dangerous than a bee or wasp sting. See pi85 for more on insects and other creatures found in the Cook Islands, their stings and what to do if you do get stung.

Pesky Creatures

Although some people groove to the music of nature, others do not. Squawking roosters and croaking frogs often begin their chorus in the predawn hours, so light sleepers may want to bring along earplugs. You can expect to find mosquitoes and sandflies throughout the region, both of which can be quite voracious. In addition, a few of the islands have chiggers, no-see-ums and centipedes.

Insects

Like any tropical climate, Hawaii is home to lots of bugs. Most of them won't harm you. However, watch out for mosquitoes, centipedes, and scorpions, which do sting and may cause anything from mild annoyance to severe swelling and pain. MOSQUITOES These pesky insects are not native to Hawaii but arrived as larvae stowed away in water barrels on the ship Wellington in 1826, when it anchored in Lahaina. There's not a whole lot you can do about them, except to apply commercial repellent, which you can pick up at any drugstore. CENTIPEDES These segmented bugs with a jillion legs come in two varieties 6- to 8-inch-long brown ones and 2- to 3-inch-long blue guys. Both can really pack a wallop with their sting. Centipedes are generally found in damp, wet places, such as under wood piles or compost heaps wearing closed-toe shoes can help prevent stings. If you're stung, apply ice at once to prevent swelling. See a doctor if you experience extreme pain, swelling, nausea, or any other severe...

M Animal Life

The nastiest critter on the island is undoubtedly the poisonous centipede, whose sting is excruciatingly painful and potentially (though seldom) fatal. Don't mistake it for the cute and harmless millipede, which usually measures no more than an inch or two long and which curls into a tight coil if touched. The centipede can grow to ghastly lengths of a foot or more, and is instantly recognizable by its two devilish horns and quickness on its (many) feet. It is a species seldom spared by Puerto Ricans, who kill it by squashing it repeatedly with a large stone or brick, or pinning it down and slicing it to pieces with long-handled kitchen utensils.

Bocas Islands

CENTIPEDE ISLAND - One of those small ice-cream-scoop-shaped islands passed on your left as you head out to the larger islands in this group. Centipede, as you can imagine, is known for its centipedes - they are said to be very large, though we didn't see any. It is also a roosting site for pelicans, and the trees are covered with these large birds each evening. Hawks are also commonly sighted here.
